The 13. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division der SS „Handschar was a division of the Waffen-SS composed of Muslim volunteers, mostly Bosniaks.
After the lost Battle of Stalingrad and due to the increasing resistance in occupied Yugoslavia, the German army looked for opportunities to deploy local troops against the partisans. The Muslims, in turn, had ended up in the Independent State of Croatia, where they were treated as second-class citizens. In November 1942, Bosnian Muslim leaders sent a memorandum to Hitler asking for their own territory and armed forces.
On March 1, 1943, a Croatian Volunteer Division for Muslims in Bosnia was established. On October 22 of that year the name was changed to 13. SS-Freiwilligen(Bosnisch Herzegovinische)-Gebirgs-Division (Kroatien) and in June 1944 the division was given its final name.
Germany had several small Muslim units; the 13. Waffen-Gebirgs-Division was, by the end of 1943, the largest division with 21,065 men, including 18,000 Muslims. The name Handschar refers to Khanjar, an Arabian dagger.
