Formed on October 15, 1942, by renaming the 544th Infantry Regiment and subordinated to the 389th Infantry Division. The regiment was destroyed at Stalingrad in February 1943.

Reestablished on February 17, 1943, in stages in northern France. On June 29, 1943, the 2nd Battalion was attached to the 755th Infantry Regiment. On April 1, 1944, it was reinforced in Hungary by the Milowitz Shadow Division. On July 1, 1944, the 3rd Battalion was renamed the 2nd Battalion, and on November 7, 1944, the 1st Battalion was disbanded.
